Poteau, OK — On Tuesday, November 4—Election Day across the nation—thirty-one Carl Albert State College American Government students had the unique opportunity to meet virtually with U.S. Senator James Lankford. The Webex session took place during their regular class period and offered students a firsthand look at the legislative process, public service, and national leadership.
Senator Lankford dedicated 30 minutes to the discussion, answering questions prepared by the students and their instructor, Jeff Bengs. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, from the Senator’s committee assignments to his experience working with President Trump and reflections on personal leadership lessons.
“Early in the semester, I shared with my students that I would try to schedule a meeting with one of our Oklahoma congressional members,” said Instructor Jeff Bengs. “My first choice was Senator Lankford, and thankfully, we were able to get a meeting scheduled.”
Students were eager to engage, asking thoughtful questions such as, “What committees do you serve on in the Senate?”, “What’s it like working with President Trump?”, and “What is one mistake in your life that turned into a major learning lesson?”
Bengs noted that the class found great value in the experience. “I think the students enjoyed the time with the Senator. They all seemed to be tuned in to hearing what he shared.”
Before concluding the session, Senator Lankford offered a final piece of advice to the students: “Don’t believe everything you read or see on social media about what is happening with the government.”
The discussion reflects Carl Albert State College’s commitment to providing accessible, real-world learning opportunities that help students understand the world around them—and envision the future leaders they can become.
